Lifter removal question??

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the lifters & pushrods from the S&S evo without having to remove the rockers? I don't have the quickie pushrods either. Will the lifters drop out the bottom through the cam area? Just doing a cam and lifter change and didn't want to remove the rockers if I didn't have to .

They've got to come out of the top. Collapse all your pushrods before removing the roller rocker stand to relieve the pressure. Be sure to mark where each pushrod came from as all 4 are different lengths and MUST go back in the same position.

Do you have to change your lifters? Their is a magnetic tool available to hold the lifters up for a cam change.

If you do have to replace the lifters I would suggest cutting out your old pushrods and getting a set of quickie pushrods as replacements. Other wise you will have to pull the rockers off of each cylinder. And to me if you have the quickie pushrods you can change cams in the future with less hassle as well as the fact that if the top end is tight and dry why pull it appart if you don't have to?

And one other note if you do remove the rockers to get the rods out your gas tank may possibly be in the way and have to be removed as well.

The reason I need to pull the lifters out is to see if they have limiters in them. Or, do I need limiters if im only going with a .625 lift cam?

Not sure if the limiters are in your engine or not. They were not in my 05 or 08. But since you are talkin about a .625 cam you will probabley need heavier valve springs and roller tip rockers. My 08 came with springs only rated to
.585 and non roller tip rockers

I have already put the red stripe triple springs on and roller rockers. It did have the springs and rockers that you referenced.

Olde Man is on a distinguished road
Lifters without limiters have .200 betweem full extension and going solid. With limiters installed it is .100 To check loosen a pushrod until it is completely loose and then leave everthing alone for about 5 min to allow the lifter to fully extend. Then finger tighten the pushrod until it just makes contact with the rocker and lifter. Start extending the pushrod while counting turns. This will be collapsing the lifter. When you get a lot more resistance you will have the lifter bottomed out. Stop. The larger resistance will be because you are trying to lift the valve off of the seat. If you have limiters installed the turn count will be 3 turns and 1 flat. Without limiters the count will be 6 turns and 2 flats. This is based on a pushrod with 32 threads per inch. The limiters are nothing more than a .100 thick washer that is laying in the bottom of the lifter that limits the plunger travel.

I will give s&s a call on Monday but Im not sure if I would trust their answer. I have talked to them before and they have gave conflicting answers on other engine components.

Olde Man, thanks so much for the info on checking for limiters. That seems to be the way I need to verify it before doing a complete tear down.

Im still doing research on the limiters trying to figure out the pro's and con's of them. So if there is a reason why I don't need them, someone chime in and let me know.

John went over it with me...I was pretty intent on putting them in...I really couldn't tell you the reasons why or not...but my bike is bult up quit a bit...and so far the only prob was gettin carb dialed in with the thunderjets....so I would prob give john sachs a pm or call him...as your situation might be different from mine....johns a great guy and cares he follows up.....I know he doesn't have alot of free time but he usually makes some available....good luck....if ya take the rockers off you should send the heads ta john...best move I could of done....quit a diff in the bike....

Seems that I have always heard that the red stripe springs were good up to a .600 cam, but have never heard where a larger cam was used with the red stripes. You may want to search that out some.

The S&S site shows them for a .640 lift cam and I bought them from S&S.

Im still trying to figure out if I need the lifter limiters or not?
