How Remove/Install/Swap your speedo

Place a nice soft towel on the floor or work bench where you'll be able to get at it later. If you don't trust yourself, get someone you can hand the gas tank to.

First pull your 4-3/16" allen bolt mounts on the gas tank. Turn petcock to off. Remove your gas line clamp at the petcock.

Wrap your speedo with a towel like shown here from when I was putting the tank back on.

With the handlebars turned and you sitting on the bike.

Carefully lift the gas tank up. It will come out. You must pull towards you to remove it from under the speedo. It takes some smoothness.

Hand it off or carefully place it on the said towel. Be carefull not to turn on the petcock during this or you will be unhappy and smell like gas.

Trace the speedo wires from the pod thru the tripple clamps and to the wiring under the tank. You will have to snip a few zip ties. Unclip the harnesses.

Now remove the 2 - 3/16" allens that hold the stem to the handlebars. I used a set of long ball ended allens for a ratchet.

Once that has been unbolted work the wires out of the tripple clamps and you'll have the pod and stem off the bike.

Now you can remove the stem from the pod with the 2 - 5/32" allens

Now pull the 5/64" allen to remove the gauges from the pod.

You'll end up looking like this

Once you un-clip the harnesses, Remove your hex head nylon nuts and pull the bracket from the setup.

The speedo slides in from the front. Swap the speedo gauge and re-install the bracket, you will see that its dumby proof. There are notches for everything to fit together. Add some di-electric grease to the connections and clip back together.

Now its just back tracking...

Now make sure you didn't loose the little spacer for the5/64" allen. Re-install the gauges into the pod and bolt together.

Run wires thru new stem and don't forget to put some loctite on these bolts. Bolt the 2 - 5/32" allens to mount the pod to the new stem.

Now is a good time to polish up the pod. Then I put cotton gloves on to stop from finger printing it all up.

Run the wires thru the tripple clamp and bolt the stem to the bars using the 2 - 3/16" allens.

Once that is all done, re-wrap your speedo for the tank installation.

Put more di-electric grease in your connections under the gas tank.

Shrink wrap if you do that sort of thing. As I described HERE! If you haven't done it now might be a good time.

Test run the speedo by simply turning on your ignition. See if it reads and runs its self test. If all checks out lets get you back on the road.

Put back on the zip ties you cut off. Re-install the gas tank.

Then marvle in its new supportive and smooth operating greatness.

Thanks gents. And beeno... in michigan my attitude is a must if you don't want your dog down for 3 weeks for every squeek.

Gooddoggie... well then the speedo wasn't chrome. Now it is... along with every other part besides about 6. Hand controls, foot controls, and brake calipers... everything else chrome.

but right now I use wizards. It seems to work great and the sealer really cuts down on re-polish time.

paul... will have to see a guy with a tank mounted speedo give you some tips... I haven't been there.

EJ.... I think wiring would be the only issue but I don't see why not. Dogvet may be able to shed more light on it.

Thanks Gas I pulled the speedo a few weeks ago. It was actually really easy to do. My Speedo doesn't work at all now. What a piece of shit speedo. I am really looking for a good substitute I called the Harley/Big dog dealership and they said that the stock replacement was currently out of stock at Big Dog and it is $300 to replace. You can pretty much figure on what I told them to do with the replacement. LOL
