How To swap out pegs & grips

Well I was able to buy a set of Roulette Pegs & Grips from a forum member. Got a great deal and very thankfull of that.

So now time to swap them out.

The pegs are pretty straight forward.

Your stock pegs



Remove the 5/32" allen bolt from the peg and retain both the bolt and the plastic bushings from each side of the pegs clevis.


You may want to clean out or polish your clevis now that its easier to access.

Now put those plastic bushing on the sides of your new pegs.


Be sure to put the squared end of the peg at the bottom of clevis. Apply some locktite to the bolt and bolt in your new peg.

Now remove the 5/32" allen from the back of the toe peg.


Watch for the set stud on the stock pegs. You will not need the set stud or the bolt from these. So put them aside.

Simply apply some locktite to the new bolts and bolt it up.

Repeat for other side, then polish up the forward controls to remove all your grubby hand print marks and enjoy the buety of the new pegs.

Now lets start on the grips. I know this carries a troublesome thoughts of dealing with the BD controls and throttle cables. But I found it to be ALOT easier than lead on.

Lets start with the left grip.

Loosen the 1/8" allen controls set screw (like this right side pic)


Remove the 2 - 3/16" allen screws from the front of the housing to seperate the housing.

Now remove the 2 stock 5/64" allen set screws on the grip.


You will notice that the stock grip has 2 set screws right next to each other. Where as these Roulette's have 3 set screws around the whole grip.



Loctite all 3 grip set screws and install the grip.

Loctite your 2 - 3/16" allen and re-essemble the control housing. Then loctite the controls 1/8" set screw, position the controls at the proper angle for your comfort.

Left side done!

On to the right side and all its throttle control glory!

Loosen your throttle cables


Loosen the 1/8" controls set screw


Seperate the controls with the 2 - 3/16" allens. You will now see the throttle cable farrels in the grip.

Now keep the 3/16" allens and tool close by. If you need to leave, DO NOT leave controls hanging by the wires!!!! Simple spin the allens into the 2 control halfs and then leave. You can come back to the job and not damage anything.

Lift the cable and remove the farrels. Be sure to keep an eye on these... they are small and can fall off easily and be lost.




Now do the other


The grip will now slide off and you can compare the two.


I always apply a small amount of grease to the bars it will help keep the grips sliding smoothly. (You can also now see how you can re-essemble the controls if you need to leave the project for any reason.)


Slide the grip in place so you don't get covered in grease.


Now slide the farrels and cables into place


Make sure to get the farrels install correctly. Example of the WRONG way.


Simply loctite the 2 - 3/16" allen bolts to re-unite the 2 halfs of the controls.

Then adjust position the controls at the proper angle for your comfort and hopefully to match the left side. Loctite the controls 1/8" set screw and tighten.

I like them. They are what I expected. The lack of horizontal rubber strips accross the front of the grip isn't good. But its not bad. Holding throttle speed on the stock grips is a bit easier. On the stock grips all you have to do is lock your fingertips on one of those horizontal rubber strips, you don't have to squeeze that much. On these with no horizontal you have to squeeze them a bit more.

GasMan, thank you for the lesson on 7-23-2007 regarding the grips & peg replacement procedure. I will be attempting to change out my stock pegs and maybe the grips over the Christmas holiday. I have an 05 BD Chopper. My neighbor is a mechanic and also has a BD. I will be asking him for his assistance. Any further tips? I will be installing Big Dog ACCU Spike Grips & Pegs from Big Dog Motorcycle Grips Thanks for any input.

Great job Gas, lots of pics.
I have also replaced my grips, but did not loosen the allen screw at all nor greased the rod. Did not replace my pegs because of the small screw holding the brake lever and the shifter. As you noticed, the only screw holding your brake lever is less than one inch. As for the stock shifter, it goes all the way thru the other end; plus it has a pin to prevent rotation.
In a hard braking situation, it is possible to break the small screw holding the aftermarket levers.

I wish I seen this before replacing my grips, I lost a ferell and had to make a temporary one until I could get a replacement.
